Rationale
Rochester Secondary College has a policy that all students will wear uniform. The College believes a set uniform reinforces in students a pride in their own appearance, instils recognition of themselves as an integral part of the school community, and assists in developing pride in representing their school. Issues of equality, health and safety, and expense are also factors that contribute to the establishment of the Dress Code.
Aims
• To promote equality amongst all students.
• To foster a sense of pride in, and identification with our school.
• To provide durable clothing that is cost effective and practical for our school environment.
• To maintain and enhance the positive image of the school in the community.
Implementation
After consultation with the whole school community, School Council has developed a uniform that provides choice for the students, allows for students to safely engage in the many varied school activities, and caters for the financial constraints of families.
• The uniform applies during school hours, while travelling to and from school, and when students are on school excursions, unless otherwise notified.
• Student footwear must have enclosed heel and toe and have a sole that will prevent the foot being penetrated by sharps. Black leather footwear or black runners are suitable. Thongs, scuffs and sandals are not permitted nor are thin, slipper-type shoes.
• Students are required to wear sun smart broad brimmed hats when outdoors in terms 1 & 4. Hats are not to be worn indoors.
• Jewellery should be kept to a minimum and removed or covered where it poses a danger to the health or safety of the student or other students.
• Make-up should be kept to a minimum.
• The student uniform, including details of uniform items and places of purchase, will be published in enrolment packages and in the newsletter at the start of each year.
• All school staff will be responsible for implementation of the uniform in a manner consistent with the Student Code of Conduct.
• The school wellbeing leader can support families to obtain uniform items in cases of financial hardship.
• Parsons and Sportspower of Rochester have been authorised to stock supplies of uniform items.
